Waistcoats
Originally considered an undergarment, by the 18th century waistcoats
had become accepted as outerwear. Waistcoats intended to be worn with a
coat were often made with a less expensive fabric in the back since it
wouldn't show under the coat. Waistcoats intended as outer wear were
commonly made with the same fabric front and back. Additionally, the
back seam could be sewn up or left open and laced for an adjustable fit.

| 1750's Waistcoat Appropriate for the French and Indian War era, this waistcoat falls to about mid thigh and has a straight hem. Featuring pewter buttons and functional pockets, it can be made with a laced back for an accommodating fit. Lined in cotton, it is offered in wool, fustian, or cotton broadcloth. | Colonial Waistcoat Waistcoats became shorter around the 1770's, to fall at about the hip and having the fronts cut away into an inverted 'V' shape. The top buttons were often left undone to expose the ruffles on fine shirts. Offered in wool, fustian, or cotton broadcloth and lined in cotton. Includes functional pockets and pewter buttons.
